
Introduction
The Clothing Industry Training Institute was established under the Act No. 3 of 1984 to bring about improvements in the Clothing Industry and to ensure an adequate supply of properly trained personnel at all levels in the industry. IDA / World Bank, financed the project for the establishment of CITI. Fielden House Productivity Centre, Manchester, UK, provided the consultancy services for five years to develop the operational activities. Subsequently the JICA extended their project type technical co-operation for the upgrading of services, for a period of 5 years, commencing from the year 1995.
From the inception of the Institute it was under the purview of Ministry of Industrial Development until it was brought under the Ministry of Tertiary Education & Training, at the end of December 2001. At Present it is functioning under the Ministry of Textile industry Development and managed by a Board of Governors who’s members represent the Ministry, Garment Industry, Associations and Academies.
